Coaching Staff

Matt Butler

Head Coach

Matt has more than 10 years of coaching experience, beginning when his son, Brennen, was playing 10U. He coached Brennen throughout his youth hockey career, all the way through 18U AA, and has continued coaching alongside him, with Brennen now serving as one of his assistant coaches. Six years ago, Matt founded the St. Louis Storm, where he has focused on growing a successful spring and summer program for players ages 14U–18U. This season, the program featured 88 players and competed in six tournaments.

Brennen Butler

Assistant Coach

Brennen has been playing hockey for the past 10 years, competing with St. Peters Hockey Club, Timberland High School, and as a Co-Founder of the St. Louis Storm. This past spring, he joined the Storm coaching staff, where he gained valuable coaching experience while helping lead the program to five championship game appearances.

In addition to coaching with the Storm, Brennen has spent the spring and summer working one-on-one and in small groups with young players, helping them develop their skills and prepare for the upcoming season with their respective teams.

Charlie Jones

Assistant Coach

Charlie began coaching as a junior at Francis Howell North High School. Sidelined with a medical issue, he focused his attention on coaching the other goalies on his team. After graduation, he continued working with the Francis Howell North Knights varsity goaltenders until the club folded in 2022. Charlie is on staff with the Winterland Instructional Program, where he coaches goalies and skaters at all ages and skill levels from 6u-Adults. He is also an assistant coach with the St. Louis Rockets. Charlie has been a goalie for 13 years. A long-time student of Racine Goalie Academy, Charlie was both an attendee and counselor for Mitch Korn’s Goalie Camp. He is an USA Hockey Level 3 Coach.

Steve Michael

Assistant Coach

Steve, a 1994 graduate of Francis Howell North High School, brings a strong passion for hockey, player development, and helping young athletes reach their full potential. He has been actively involved with the St. Peters Hockey Club for almost a decade as a head coach and currently serves on the club’s Board of Directors as Secretary.

With experience as both a player and coach, Steve’s coaching philosophy emphasizes hard work, accountability, and teamwork.

As an FHN alumnus, Steve is especially proud to return to Francis Howell North as a member of the Junior Varsity coaching staff. He looks forward to contributing to the continued development of the players, strengthening the program, and helping build a competitive and successful hockey culture at FHN.
